Ken Goldstein, professor of political science at University of Wisconsin Madison, gave a presentation to the Association of Wisconsin Lobbyists titled “Political Trends and Polling.” Goldstein is the author of Interest Groups, Lobbying, and Participation in America and is currently at work on a book project on television advertising and campaign finance. He has worked as an election night consultant for CNN and CBS News and is currently a consultant for the ABC News political unit. His presentation focused on the state of the election from primarily a presidential point of view, the in the Q&A session, he touched op state politics.

10.19.08 | Standing with Courage: A Forum with Educational Leaders

As part of a conference hosted by Madison / Dane County Courage to Teach, a forum titled Standing with Courage: A Forum with Educational Leaders was held. The forum  was designed to address the challenges that educators face in dealing with academic disparities at a time when budgets are tightening and expectations are increasing. The forum featured several educational speakers; Gloria Ladson-Billings, Kellner Family Professor in Urban Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at UW-Madison, Elizabeth Burmaster, State Superintendent of the WI Department of Public Instruction; Parker J. Palmer , author of The Courage to Teach; Dan Nerad, Superintendent of the Madison Metropolitan School District; and Rebecca Zambrano, Instructor for Edgewood College's ESL Bilingual Licensing Program. Each of the educational leaders selected and read a poem that spoke to an aspect of these challenges and then added their perspectives.

The Wisconsin Freedom of Information Council, a statewide nonprofit group devoted to protecting access to public meetings and records, will mark its 30th anniversary with a program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on October 13, 2008. The program, hosted by the UW-Madison School of Journalism and Mass Communication, included an address by Shirley Abrahamson, chief justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court, on the importance of open government in Wisconsin. The event also featured a debate between Council President Bill Lueders and Rep. Marlin Schneider, D-Wisconsin Rapids, over online access to court records and a performance of "The Open Records Blues," by Madison singer-songwriter Peter Leidy.

Amber Gonske visits with John Lemke, Retail & PR Manager of the Wisconsin Historical Museum on October 2nd to take a peak at the museum’s newest exhibit.  Odd Wisconsin features a number of Wisconsin stories and artifacts with an interesting background, from the Bascom Hill Flamingos to the glass used by Teddy Roosevelt when he was shot in Milwaukee, and much more. WisconsinEye had the opportunity to talk with some of the donors and hear about their connection to some of the artifacts in the exhibit.

Amber Gonske and Huibregtse visited the dairy barns, trade show, the Badger Dairy Club tent, the milking parlor, and the Coliseum show ring to learn about the annual event and the importance of the dairy industry in Wisconsin, as well as world wide.
